San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula fared much better in his interactions with the press at the NFL Scouting Combine than he did when he was first introduced as the team’s head coach last month.
Instead of muttering unintelligible grunts, Tomsula cracked a few jokes at his own expense and seemed much more at ease than he did with 49ers owner Jed York and general manager Trent Baalke breathing over his shoulder or sitting across from Jim Kozimor.
The secret to Tomsula’s improved performance? A good night’s sleep.
“I didn’t do a good job,” Tomsula said of his press conference on Jan. 15. “You know what I mean? I didn’t do a good job. Bobby was trying to get me to go to bed that night and I didn’t. I’m driving him crazy. He called me three times last night to make sure I went to bed.”
Press conferences are not going to make or break how well a head coach handles his job (Bill Belichick is living proof that one can hold the media in absolute contempt and be the best in the business at the same time) but this shows that Tomsula can at least hold a conversation with cameras in his face.
The difference between this performance on Thursday and this hot mess from last month couldn’t be starker.
