CBS Sports’ top NFL play-by-play announcer, Jim Nantz, has spoken about the arrest of Tony Romo, his partner in the booth, for OWI in July, which has led to J.J. Watt replacing him for the time being.
Romo signed an enormous 10-year contract with CBS and has been partnered with Nantz ever since. On Tuesday’s NFL on CBS Media Day, Awful Announcing asked Nantz if he was “in the loop” on what was going on with Romo and his future at the network.
“I really was just laying low,” Nantz said. “I had golf events to do, and I knew they had a lot to, you know, look at, sort out. But I made my mind up because we have this late flurry of golf events on the schedule.
“I was going to communicate with Tony, which we have, back and forth. …I just kind of wanted to focus on what’s in front of me, and that’s what I’ve done.”
He was charged with operating while intoxicated after he was pulled over and allegedly found to have had an open container in his vehicle and to be performing poorly during field sobriety tests.
CBS Sports President David Berson said that the network was “still assessing” the “evolving” situation.
“We have to consider the impact on our image and our brand,” Berson said at the media day. “That’s very important to us. The focus should be and needs to be on our presentation and this great product and not on any others.
