Earlier this month, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker caused quite a stir with a controversial commencement address at a small Catholic college in which he criticized transgender people, mocked LGBTQ Pride Month, spoke out against women’s fertility treatments, and suggested that women should be “homemakers.” The speech caused a strong reaction on social media, but it doesn’t appear to have affected the Chiefs’ locker room.
During a press conference this week, Andy Reid made it very clear that the speech from Harrison Butker was not a distraction to the team in the locker room and that he had no plans to offer any discipline or even discuss the speech with Butker.
“The guys are good with that,” Reid said according to Pro Football Talk. “They understand. They understand how things work. I mean, everybody’s got their own opinion. And that’s what so great about this country. You can share those things and you work through it. And that’s what guys do.”
The speech may have been controversial, but it does not seem that Butker’s words have caused any sort of rift in the Chiefs’ locker room as they try to prepare for the upcoming NFL season and defend their Super Bowl title.
