Drew Bledsoe was a legitimate superstar quarterback during his time in the league, winning a Super Bowl and making four Pro Bowls. But now, he’s primarily remembered as the New England Patriots quarterback who was benched in favor of Tom Brady.
During a recent appearance on Keyshawn Johnson’s “All Facts No Brakes” podcast, Drew Bledsoe admitted that it “kind of sucks” to only be seen as the guy who Tom Brady replaced.
“When I retired, there were only, five or six guys in the history of the NFL that had thrown for more yards than me,” Blesdose said on the podcast according to Fox News. “[Dan] Marino, [Fran] Tarkenton, [John] Elway, [Warren] Moon, [Brett] Favre, [Vinny] Testaverde, then me. That was the entire list of the people that had thrown for more yards than I had thrown for in my 14 years — pretty nice career, right? But when people look back, you know, all they see is ‘the guy before Tom.’
“That part kind of sucks.”
Obviously, the biggest NFL fans very fondly remember Bledsoe’s career and his contributions to the game, but he’s definitely right that the average person primarily remembers him as the quarterback Brady replaced.
