Dallas Cowboys team owner and general manager Jerry Jones has made it pretty clear that the team intended to sign quarterback Dak Prescott to a new contract this offseason, but as Prescott heads into the final year of his contract, it doesn’t actually look like that’s going to happen.
According to a report from league insider Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, there is “no indication a deal is coming” for Dak Prescott even despite the fact that he is in a contract year.
“The #Cowboys and QB Dak Prescott have a mutual understanding of his contract situation, sources say, with no offers from Dallas despite him being in a contract year. Owner Jerry Jones said, ‘We are where we are, locked and loaded for this year.’ No indication a deal is coming,” Rapoport said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

This is obviously shocking news for a number of reasons.
For starters, Jones has made it clear the team would like to sign Prescott to a long-term contract extension and wants him as the team’s quarterback for the foreseeable future. Given that Prescott has a no-trade and no-tag clause in his contract, if the team does not sign him to a new deal and allows him to play out his contract this season, he will become an unrestricted free agent next season and could leave the team.
If Prescott were to leave the team following the 2025 season, the Cowboys would then be facing a pretty brutal situation regarding his contract because Prescott would still count for $40.460 million in dead money against the team’s cap even if he was not on the team.
Needless to say, it’s pretty shocking that the team is set to let him play out his contract.
