The Dallas Cowboys had one of the more disappointing regular season campaigns. After signing star offensive players Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb to enormous contract extensions in the offseason, Dallas failed to make the playoffs.
Many felt that it was time for the organization to move on from McCarthy, but team owner Jerry Jones affirmed his interest in coming to terms with McCarthy to bring him back.
However, the sides were unable to come to a resolution, according to one prominent league insider.
“Members of (Cowboys) coach Mike McCarthy’s staff have now been informed that the two sides are separating and his contract will expire. McCarthy is free to speak with other teams — (Saints) and (Bears) are at the top of the list,” reported NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Monday.

Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“First Dallas win of the year. They are moving on!” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“I speak for all Cowboys fans when I say we are devastated we lost Mike!! He was our best chance to win a SuperBowl,” another fan added.
“About time. Now if Jerry can allow himself to hire a coach who isn’t a ‘yes’ man. Otherwise it’s just rinse and repeat for use Cowboy fans,” added one fan.
It’ll be interesting to see who Dallas tabs for McCarthy’s replacement.
