On Thursday at the Beverly Center in Los Angeles, 49ers offensive tackle Jonathan Martin witnessed an in-progress shoplifting crime at the Versace Collection store.
So, without really thinking about it, Martin sprung into action and chased after one of the suddenly-very-unlucky thieves. Martin felt that he had to help because the shoplifter was bigger than the security guard who was trying to detain him. Luckily for the guard, Martin is a pretty big dude.
In order to subdue the thief, Martin punched him “five to eight times” which was enough to get a handle of the situation without allowing anything to get out of hand.
Martin stated that he just wanted to help when he spoke with Shutdown Corner:
“I didn’t even think. I just reacted. It wasn’t till later when [my friend] said, ‘He could have had a gun.’ I didn’t even think about it. I just wanted to help.”
Unfortunately, the other shoplifter got away.
Afterwards, Martin found the time to take a picture of his eventful afternoon and he posted evidence of his #CivicDuty to Twitter.
