In a headline-grabbing story, VCU head volleyball coach James Finley says he was fired November 19th because of his sexual orientation. The Rams’ first season in the Atlantic 10 conference resulted in a 25-6 record, good enough for Finley’s best winning percentage in his eight year tenure.
With his contact expiring December 31st, an extension was expected but instead was informed by first year Athletic Director Ed McLaughlin and Associate Athletic Director Jeff Cupps that his contract would not be renewed. The perplexing reasoning? This decision was reportedly not based upon win-loss record.
The 52-year-old married Finley has filed a formal complain with the Office for Institutional Equity at VCU, specifically citing a non-existent relationship with McLaughlin and comments made during their meeting in which Finley state, “he wanted somebody to better represent the school.”
