On Thursday, the Philadelphia 76ers unveiled their new uniforms. On the plus side, they’re a pretty great homage to old school Sixers jerseys from the franchise’s storied past. The home white and road blues are influenced by the jerseys that the team wore while Wilt Chamberlain was a Sixer. The red alternate is inspired by the iconic look that was worn by Dr. J.
While one could say that these lack bold, new design elements, the new jerseys do come with some neat details. Each jersey will have “Phila Tough” sewn onto it upside down so that players see it when they tuck in their jerseys.
In addition, the jerseys will sport a gold tag on the back collar which acts as a tribute to the 76ers three NBA championships.
The only awkward element of the new look is the ring of 13 stars on the center of the waistband. It’s just one of those things that kind of unnecessarily detracts from the pleasant simplicity of the rest of the Sixers’ design here.
Still, these unis are very solid. As one recent jersey unveiling taught us, it could have been a lot worse.
