The San Diego Padres won the MLB offseason. Unfortunately, it only matters when you win during the actual season and they’re struggling to do just that.
After dominating offseason headlines with the acquisition of James Shields, Will Myers, Craig Kimbrel, Derek Norris, Justin Upton, Melvin Upton and a few other key players, many were predicting big things for the Padres in 2015, namely a World Series run. Despite recent improvement in July, entering Friday, they’re still only 49-53 and eight games back of the NL West-leading Dodgers. They’re also 7.5 games back of the Giants for the second Wild Card spot.
We’ve seen teams make similar offseason moves (Miami Marlins in 2012 and Toronto Blue Jays in 2013) that prompted World Series predictions before they fell flat on their faces. The Padres’ offseason haul brought similar reactions, which now look very foolish:
