After getting upset about what David Ortiz called “the worst call of the year,” and making a few moves to get himself ejected in the seventh inning last night against the Orioles, the Red Sox designated hitter took a bat to the phone in Camdens Yards’ visitors’ dugout. Dustin Pedroia, half Ortiz’s size, can be seen trying to calm his teammate down, but to no avail.
According to Sporting News MLB, Ortiz was not thrilled with a call earlier in the at-bat:
The designated hitter struck out in the seventh inning and was apparently upset over a strike call earlier in the at-bat on a 3-0 pitch. Ortiz had appeared to step out of the box but had not been granted time on the pitch from Jairo Asencio. Ortiz thought the pitch was a ball and flipped his bat away, thinking he had drawn a walk, but it was called a strike by home plate umpire Tim Timmons. Two pitches later, Ortiz struck out.
Ortiz went 0-2 with two walks as the Sox beat the O’s 7-3.
