While Lakers Nation and the NBA mourns the passing of owner Jerry Buss, let’s hop in the CS Time Machine and head back to 2002, the last time a who’s who of Lakers legends gathered to mourn one of their own — the late broadcaster, Chick Hearn. Speaking at Hearn’s funeral was Magic Johnson, who, in wrapping up his eloquent eulogy, turned and thanked “Colonel” Roger Mahoney for a wonderful ceremony. It’s an innocent hiccup, uttered in a pre-YouTube, pre-Twitter age — almost a lost moment in television history. But it’s worth revisiting, if only to add a bit of levity on an otherwise somber day.
