Game Boy was released in North America in 1989 in an attempt to compete Sega Game Gear, Atari Lynx and the TurboExpress, but instead of simply competing, it revolutionized the handheld gaming industry. The console, manufactured by Nintendo was launched with only six total games worldwide, five of which were available in North America.
Gamers were able to choose from Alleyway, Baseball, Super Mario Land, Tennis and Tetris. Folks in Japan also had Yakuman. Twenty-six years later, the Game Boy has dramatically changed but the original is still played by thousands of people worldwide. Check out the original Game Boy commercial from 1989:
