Edith Rodriguez and Pablo Ocegueda were both victims of a terrible accident at their high school’s Spirit Week when they each had multiple fingers severed while playing a game of tug-of-war.
Exactly how their fingers were severed is up in the air. Students at South El Monte (Calif.) High School said, “the rope, like, broke, and their fingers went with it.”
“Fingers (were) amputated during some type of tug-of-war,” L.A. County Fire Capt. Miguel Garcia told the paper. “They were transported by ambulance to a trauma center.” Rodriguez lost a total of four fingers and Ocegueda “lost several fingers,” according to reports.
Doctors at the L.A. County-USC Medical Center were able to surgically reattach the severed fingers, and they are hoping that both students will regain full use of their digits. Both Rodriguez and Ocegueda are seniors at South El Monte and both play sports. Rodriguez is a midfielder and defender on the girl’s soccer team and Ocegueda played both wide receiver and safety on the football team.
According to the reports, the school district has not decided whether they will allow students to continue to play tug-of-war or not, but common sense would say they will be getting rid of all tug-of-war games in future Spirit Week activities.
