Russia eliminated reigning gold medal winners Team USA from the World Junior Championships in the quarterfinals of the tournament on Thursday morning, topping the Americans by a score of 5-3. The Russians moved to 5-0 against America in WJC elimination games but they didn’t exactly act like they had been there before.
After scoring the empty-netter that sealed USA’s fate, Russia’s Pavel Buchnevich skated by the US bench and taunted them with a celebration before being stuck in the face with the stick of Brady Skjei at the end of the Americans’ bench. In a bit of twisted irony, both Buchnevich and Skjei are prospects within the New York Rangers organization and could be future teammates.
A coach or trainer on the Russian bench then also proceeded to taunt the USA bench with an obscene gesture, one that may see him in a bit of trouble from the IIHF.
