As clearly the most highly coveted on the MLB free agent market, Josh Hamilton has the right to demand a few bucks but his most recent request is absurd. The 31-year-old injury-prone outfielder has reportedly asked for $175 million over 7 years, according to John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus.
Over his five seasons in Texas, Hamilton’s numbers are certainy worthy of Albert Pujols’ type cash but has averaged only 129 games played per season because of those injuries. It is unclear which team could even afford that massive of a price tag but if the Milwaukee Brewers were serious about their earlier interest, they are clearly out of the running now.
Oftentimes those requests are made by a player’s agent looking for that 10% cut but regardless, $25 million per year for 7 years is ridiculously comical for an aging player with a recent injury history and previous substance abuse issues.
The Yankees, Dodgers, Angels, Braves, Mariners have been mentioned as potential suitors along with the Texas Rangers.
