Good news, hockey fans! The KHL released a statement on it’s official website reporting that they have reached a deal with ESPN which will allow them to broadcast certain KHL games on ESPN3. If you’ve never heard of ESPN3, it’s an online streaming service that delivers live streams and replays of global sporting events to fans in various countries. This is an awesome move on the part of the KHL and ESPN, as it takes a some power away from the NHL owners. If you remember, ESPN used to be the home of NHL hockey, but Gary Bettman screwed that one up during the last NHL lockout. No surprise there.
Hopefully the owners will begin to feel a bit threatened by the fact that they may have some competition- now that the KHL possesses a lot of their former talent and broadcasting deals. I’ve seen some pretty sick KHL highlights since the start of the season and it just might get me through these next few months. So take that, owners! But still…please please please figure this out ASAP. I still need my Kings.
Here’s the statement from the KHL’s website and the October airing schedule:
The Kontinental Hockey League has reached an agreement with the US sports TV channel ESPN to broadcast games in the 2012/2013 KHL Championship. The games will be shown on the ESPN3 channel in the United States, Territories of the United States, and also in Great Britain.
ESPN3 reaches 73 million American households and devotes most of its output to live broadcasts of events, including college football, college basketball, the NBA, MLB, ICC (International Cricket Council) competitions and qualifying matches of FIFA tournaments.
During the first ten days of October, the channel will broadcast five KHL games. The planned schedule includes:
Dynamo Moscow vs Ak Bars on Oct. 3rd;
Lev vs SKA on Oct. 6th;
Slovan vs Dynamo Moscow on Oct. 7th;
CSKA vs SKA on Oct. 8th;
Lev vs Dynamo Moscow on Oct. 9th.
