It does not appear the arms race in college athletics is slowing down anytime soon. Luxurious facilities are sprouting up across the country in major college athletic departments, with the renovations at the University of Oregon turning the most heads. Nike’s Phil Knight is contributing a significant portion of the funds for the new $68 million football operations center adjacent to Autzen Stadium, a renovation that will include a hot tub for head coach Chip Kelly. The area will also feature a waterproff video center in order for Kelly to review game footage while taking a dip in the tub.
It is not unique for coaches to receive substantial office upgrades upon facility renovations but this one was particularly unique, something that may ensure Kelly sticks around instead of making the leap to the NFL. These impressive amentities combined with a $3 million salary and big on-field potential in the near future has Chip Kelly in a enviable position.
