The Buffalo Sabres third jersey – one of most laughable bad uniforms in all of sports – is getting scrapped after this season.
Team president Ted Black announced the news during a radio appearance on Thursday, saying the jersey – hilariously dubbed the “Turdburger” – would be shelved at the conclusion of this season. It lasted only two full seasons.
From the Buffalo News:
Black admitted the team did a poor job running the design past focus groups and also said, “we didn’t anticipate the amount of ‘third-jersey fatigue’ ” in the market in the wake of the team’s 40th anniversary throwbacks.
It was Black, of course, who unintentionally christened the gold sweaters when he responded to the immediate backlash prior to last season by saying, “If it’s a turd burger I’ll have to put it on a bun and eat it.”
The name stuck, and it likely will forever.
Black said the Sabres will not have a third jersey next season and, in fact, may shelve the concept of an alternate sweater entirely until 2020, when the franchise will be celebrating its 50th anniversary.
The Sabres’ uniform efforts of late have been pretty much a disaster, so maybe it’s a good thing that they just stay away from designing new ones for a while. If they want a surefire winner, they could always go back to these beauties.
