“Luca” – Brand New
This song is nearly eight years old, but I still jump when Jesse Lacey’s shriek comes flying in around the 3:50 mark. If you haven’t listened to Brand New before, chances are this song might come across as a little strange. Then again, that makes it the perfect introductory song to Brand New’s catalogue of four completely different sounding albums.
“Luca” starts with Lacey plucking his acoustic guitar and singing a notch higher than he usually does, but, instead of continuing with this simplicity, the drums and bass come crashing in. There’s no doubt this a moody and ominous song with lyrics like “I am drearily bloodletting this bedwetting cosmonaut,” and “Please drop me a line with a hook and some raw bleeding bait. For I am uncaught and still swimming alone in the lake.”
Brand New has always been fantastic at being unconventional and dark. “Luca” takes you for a ride that might leave you feeling a little disturbed when the sound fades to nothing. Be warned and remember to turn down the volume around the 3:50 mark. – Sean
