It’s no secret that I love movie themes, especially those of John Williams. I consider him, by far, the greatest film score composer of all time. Look, if your resume includes the Star Wars Trilogy (both the Holy Trilogy and prequels), the Indiana Jones saga (again, the Holy Trilogy and the “nuked fridge” installment), and basically every film George Lucas and Steven Spielberg have ever made, you are tops in my book. Oh, and Superman. That theme is awesome! Bum bum bum ba bum…bum bum bum….bum bum bum ba bum….BUM BA BUM!
Oh, and the Olympics theme? Williams. The theme for NBC’s Sunday Night Football? Williams. The theme that plays over the Dreamworks logo before a movie? Williams. The NBC Nightly News theme? Williams.
One of Williams’ finer melodic works was the score for Jurassic Park. In the following clip, someone plays a melodica to perfection in the recreation of the scene where they first encounter the dinosaurs on the island.
NOTE: The melodica (pictured above), also known as the “blow-organ” or “key-flute”, is a free-reed instrument similar to the melodeon and harmonica. It has a musical keyboard on top, and is played by blowing air through a mouthpiece that fits into a hole in the side of the instrument. Pressing a key opens a hole, allowing air to flow through a reed. The keyboard is usually two or three octaves long. Melodicas are small, light, and portable. They are popular in music education, especially in Asia.
Sit back, relax, and prepare to have your mind blown with musical genius:
