While he was quick to point out that he’s loved the HBO adaptation of his work so far, there is one thing (ok, a couple of things) that George R.R. Martin wishes he could change about Game of Thrones.

Namely, much like the ever increasing size of his books, Martin wishes that there were more episodes of the show per season.

“I wish we had more episodes. I’d love to have 13 episodes. With 13 episodes, we could include smaller scenes that we had cut, scenes that make the story deeper and richer.”

Alas, Martin knows that there are things called “budget restraints” and “contracts” so he’s aware that he’s not likely going to see a 13 episode season of Game of Thrones.

Other nitpicks that Martin had included small changes the show has made over the years, such as a scene that was cut from season one which showed Arya and Sansa Stark arguing over whether to eat lemon cakes with Queen Cersei (Sansa’s idea) or go hunting for rubies with the butcher’s boy (Arya’s idea, obviously). Martin has also previously been critical of the show’s Iron Throne, saying that the show’s version wasn’t nearly large enough to match the descriptions of it in his books.

While trying to not fret the small stuff, Martin does say that the “butterfly effects are accumulating.”

Yes, if only George R.R. Martin were able to have a hugely influential sway over what will transpire in the Game of Thrones universe. Like, say, actually finishing writing what is going to happen to everyone’s favorite Game of Thrones characters.
