You read it correctly. Renowned distance swimmer Diana Nyad returned to the water to swim for 48 hours straight as part of a charity event to help raise money for victims of Superstorm Sandy.
She dove into the pool at 8:45am on Tuesday morning and finally left it at 8:48am today, raising $103,001 along the way. Many Sandy survivors and celebrities swam with Nyad during parts of her swim, including Olympic medalists Ryan Lochte and Gary Hall Jr., fitness icon Richard Simmons, and actress Nikki Reed.
The 64-year old Nyad last month became the first person to swim the 110-mile distance from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage, flippers, or human assistance, a feat she completed in 53 hours.
So when most of us can’t swim more than half a mile at any given time, this woman swims for two days straight.
