Earlier this month, the Ohio State Buckeyes lost running backs coach Tony Alford as he left the program to join the Michigan Wolverines. And during his press conference this week, Ryan Day addressed Alford’s departure to Ohio State’s biggest rival, as well as how Ohio State is going to replace him.
Ryan Day said that the Buckeyes were not necessarily expecting the departure, but they’re still excited about the future of the position after his departure.
“Was made aware last week and so now we’re into the process of identifying replacements,” Day said according to On3. “Excited about the group that we’ve already identified and gonna be thorough in the process. I think the good news is we’re not in a situation where we have to make a quick decision based on recruiting, or the portal, or anything like that.”
Ohio State has one of the most talented running backs rooms in the entire country with TreVeyon Henderson returning and former Ole Miss Rebels star Quinshon Judkins joining the team out of the transfer portal. Despite Alford’s departure, Day says that the running backs are still committed to playing for the Buckeyes and that they will actually be involved in choosing the next running backs room.
“I talked to the running backs, they’re great, they’re actually gonna be a part of the process. I’d like for a part of the interview process for the running backs to meet the candidates. Obviously, ultimately I’ll make the decision and Chip [Kelly] will be a huge part of it, but the input of the running backs will be important as well,” Day said.
We’ll have to see who Ohio State brings in for the job.
