Last month, the Ohio State Buckeyes made a pretty significant move when they announced the hiring of Bill O’Brien as their new offensive coordinator as head coach Ryan Day planned to give up play-calling duties to the veteran offensive mind. But with O’Brien now a real candidate for the head coaching position at Boston College, Ohio State is facing a tough situation.
As Andy Stables of On3 pointed out in his recent podcast episode, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day would certainly be in a difficult spot if Bill O’Brien were to leave the Buckeyes after less than a month to become the head coach at Boston College.
“If Bill O’Brien does indeed end up becoming Boston College’s head coach, what do you do if you’re Ryan Day?” Staples asked on the podcast this week. “Because you made a conscious decision. I’m giving up play calling. I am hiring this extremely experienced play-caller to handle game planning, play play-calling for me so I can concentrate on the other CEO duties that I need to concentrate on.
“What do you do if that guy leaves because it’s not like I mean, you’re Ohio State so you can command a lot of different people’s attention.”
Staples is right that Ohio State shouldn’t have a problem finding another offensive coordinator, but it would certainly be a pretty brutal situation for the Buckeyes and Day after they thought they had the coordinator they wanted, especially considering other coaches that they were pursuing have since been hired elsewhere.
It will certainly be interesting to see what happens.
