The Michigan Wolverines have not yet officially named their next starting quarterback after the departure of previous starter J.J. McCarthy, who was just selected as the No. 10 overall pick by the Minnesota Vikings, but a recent report from a prominent college football insider has revealed who that starter will be.
According to a report from Pete Thamel of ESPN, Alex Orji is set to be the next starting quarterback for the Michigan Wolverines.
“Well, Sherrone’s playing a little coy publicly, but sources have told me that Michigan has given Alex Orji the majority of the first-team reps at practice,” Thamel said on ESPN’s College GameDay on Saturday morning, according to On3. “He’s the expected starter right now within that program.”
As Thamel explained, Orji’s athleticism and running ability will change the offense for the Wolverines this season.
“What will we see from Alex Orji? We’ll see some quarterback run game. We’ll see a different identity from Michigan’s offense,” Thamel said. “He’s only played 25 snaps in his career but he was in real snaps against Ohio State, against Iowa in the Big Ten title game, against coach Saban in the Rose Bowl last year. So he comes with a rare amount of big-game experience for a guy who’s only thrown one pass.”
We’ll have to see how Orji performs as the team looks to defend their national title this season.
