The Michigan Wolverines are the reigning National Champions in college football. But turnover is not working in Michigan’s favor this year. Several of the Wolverines’ key contributors over the past few seasons are gone, with J.J. McCarthy, Blake Corum, and Jim Harbaugh, among others, exiting this past offseason. For more reasons than one, Michigan will look much different in 2024.
ESPN’s Greg McElroy isn’t as bullish on the Wolverines this year as he’s been in the past. McElroy recently ranked Michigan outside the Top 10 in his newest Top 25 rankings. On his Always College Football show, the former Alabama quarterback-turned-ESPN analyst explained his rationale.
McElroy explained that while there are strong pieces, the continuity isn’t there this year. He also pointed to quarterback and offensive line issues that could plague Michigan in 2024.
“The problem is on offense. I know they’re going to be able to run the football, that’s what they do,” McElroy said of the Wolverines via On3. “I look at the offensive line and there are more question marks there for me than there is for most.
“I think there are massive question marks at quarterback,” said McElroy emphatically.Alex Orji will likely take the mangle for the Wolverines this year after making sporadic appearances on the field during the 2023 college football season.
The Alabama quarterback pointed to the incoming teams that could force a new style of play to be installed. McElroy isn’t confident that the Michigan quarterback situation involving five quarterbacks will play itself out right.
Time will tell if Michigan figures it out under the center.
