The Los Angeles Chargers saw their season come to an unceremonious end on Saturday when they fell 32-12 to the Houston Texans in the NFL Wild Card Weekend opening game.

A long offseason now looms for the Chargers, who have a few key decisions on upcoming expiring contracts.

One such expiring contract is that of linebacker Khalil Mack. Mack is set to become an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his 11-year NFL career.

On Sunday, Mack said he needed to sit down with his family and consider what was next.

“Man, it’s a lot of different thoughts in my head right now,” Mack told Fernando Ramirez of the Sporting Tribune.

“I can’t really speak on a definitive decision in terms of what I’m going to do. I don’t know if I’m going to play football moving forward. There’s some things I got to talk through with my wife, spend some time with my kids and try not to make a rash decision after a loss,” the 33-year-old linebacker added.

Mack has had a prolific career. He spent his first four professional seasons with the Oakland Raiders. He was named to the All-Pro First Team thrice. Mack also became the second Raider to win the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, which he did in 2016.

Days before the 2018 regular season began, Oakland traded Mack to the Chicago Bears. Mack was with the Bears through the 2021 season. He nabbed another All-Pro First Team appearance and finished second in the 2018 Defensive Player of the Year voting.

Following the 2021 season, the Bears traded Mack to the Chargers. Mack’s time in Los Angeles will be remembered for a standout second season. He recorded a career-high 17 sacks in 2023 and was named a Pro Bowler in his three seasons.

Should he choose to retire, Mack will finish his career with 107.5 sacks, making him just one of 50 players in NFL history to cross the 100-sack threshold.

Social media had a lot to say about Mack’s comments.
