The Washington Commanders announced that one of the franchise’s greatest players will receive an overdue honor. Washington will retire the jersey number of Pro Football Hall of Famer Darrell Green.
Washington will retire Green’s number during a special ceremony in Week 6 of the upcoming 2024 NFL season.
The Commanders boasted about the announcement with a post on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.

The decision to retire Green’s number is long overdue. He’s one of the best players in franchise history, full stop. He earned All-Pro honors four times, made seven trips to the Pro Bowl, and earned a spot on the NFL’s 1990s All-Decade Team. The all-time great also was named to the 100th Anniversary All-Time team and was named one of the 80 greatest players in Washington franchise history.
Green also won two Super Bowls with Washington: Super Bowl XXII and Super Bowl XXVI.
Green led a career that lasted twenty years. He won four Fastest Man competitions in the NFL and is regarded as one of the fastest NFL players ever. Green holds numerous NFL records, including the most consecutive seasons with at least one interception (19). He also holds the Washington record for most career interceptions, starts, games played, and most pick-sixes.
If anyone deserves this honor, it’s Darrell Green, so congrats to him.
