In the seventh inning of a tie game last night, the Phillies third base coach waved around Chase Utley to try and score on a base hit to right field. Cubs right fielder Cole Gillespie gathered the line drive on a couple bounces and fired to home plate, one-hopping it to Chicago catcher Dioner Navarro, who was attempting to block the plate.
Right as the throw reached Navarro, Utley lowered his shoulder and trucked the Cubs catcher in an attempt to knock the ball loose. Navarro held on to record the out but was seriously shaken up on the play and left the game on a cart. No word on the extent of his injuries yet.
Watching the play again and again, it looks like Utley would probably have been safe at the plate if he elected to slide into home instead of going after Navarro.
