When David Moyes left Everton to become the heir to Sir Alex Ferguson’s throne he signaled the end of an era at Goodison Park. While all the talk about the move concerned how Moyes will fare at the Theatre of Dreams, Merseysiders were left wondering how on earth they were going to replace one of the most promising managers in football. Moyes roamed the Everton sideline for 11 years, and was considered Everton’s most important asset. During his tenure, he turned the Toffees from a team trying to stay in the Premier League into a team that could try and crash the Champions League.
Today the club announced that they have hired Roberto Martinez to be the next manager. Martinez had been the manager at Wigan Athletic since 2009. While at Wigan he stabilized the club, keeping the small market Latics in the Premier League for an extended spell. Despite being relegated from the BPL this season, Martinez gave the Wigan supporters a terrific parting gift — the F.A. Cup.
Martinez will have his hands full at Everton, the club is famous for working on one of the tidiest budgets in football. They have a terrific youth system and are talented at spending wise money on emerging stars.
Unfortunately for Martinez, some of Everton’s best players are rumored to be leaving the club, following in their manager’s footsteps. Marouane Fellaini, Leighton Baines, and Phil Jagielka who were all brought in on incredibly prudent deals by Moyes have all been linked to bigger, Champions League bound clubs.
While that may not be good news, it isn’t the end of the world for Martinez who will have a chance to make his mark on the club immediately by bringing in players who are more suitable for his style of football.
Martinez is also known for his candid post-game interviews, his incredibly dapper suits, and being handsome.
