Ah, The Onion…America’s shining poster child of satire. They always deliver the laughs, even if they come by unintentional means.
The greatest thing about satire is that sometimes readers don’t realize what they’re reading is intended to be a joke and wind up taking it all too seriously. Even true journalists themselves unknowingly make this mistake.
Such was the case with a recent Onion article proclaiming North Korea’s top leader, Kim Jong-Un, the Sexiest Man Alive in 2012. Not only did China publication People’s Daily republish portions of The Onion‘s piece (including gems like “He has that rare ability to somehow be completely adorable and completely macho at the same time”) they also created a slideshow to drive home the pure sex appeal of Jong-Un. Yummy! The ladies of China must be oh so moist!
To make a hilarious situation even funnier, The Onion updated its original post with the following glorious statement:
For more coverage on The Onion’s Sexiest Man Alive 2012, Kim Jong-Un, please visit our friends at the People’s Daily in China, a proud Communist subsidiary of The Onion, Inc. Exemplary reportage, comrades.
Chalk another win up for the people over at The Onion.
