During the Steelers and Chiefs match-up on Monday Night Football an unsportsmanlike penalty was given to Willie Colon for cursing, we are serious. I have logged quite a few hours over the past 15 years or so in front of TV’s on Sundays, yet this is the first time I have seen a ref call out a player like this. Mike Tomlin can be seen following the call bending an official’s ear by yelling, “This is professional football.” You can also see from the video, when the slow motion begins, that some Steelers fans did not agree with the penalty.
We did some digging and found that sure enough, cursing at an official really is against the rules. According to rule book 12 section 3, article 1, (b):
