I’m the first one to criticize today’s athletes for never taking a stand.
“What happened to athlete’s like Muhammad Ali and Jim Brown?,” I ask. Athletes that stood for something. Guys that used their platform to change the world.
The individual that epitomizes this current generation of politically mute sports stars finally used his platform for a message yesterday. Before the Miami Heat’s Friday game against The Detroit Pistons, Lebron James tweeted out the above picture of the Heat showing their support for Trayvon Martin’s family and justice for his case in the state of Florida.
Maybe this generation of athletes is growing up or maybe the magnitude of the Trayvon case is just so alarming that it’s even pushed the most corporately washed athletes into action. Regardless of the answer, this is the kind of voice we need from our megastar athletes.
