During the loss to the Houston Texans this week, the Dallas Cowboys played Cooper Rush at quarterback throughout the entire game, even despite the lopsided score. Head coach Mike McCarthy now admits that was a mistake.
In his press conference this week, Mike McCarthy admitted that he regretted the decision to play Cooper Rush the entire game instead of allowing Trey Lance to show what he can do.
Given the lopsided score, McCarthy said that he should have allowed Trey Lance to play for at least a series.
“I think the one thing I should have done at the end, and I just didn’t do, was put Trey in there. I could’ve gotten him a series. That’s one thing that I would second-guess myself on,” McCarthy said.
McCarthy said that the team opted not to build in plays for him in the regular game plan, but he should have allowed him to play for a series to show what he can do.
“I didn’t want to get into putting him in for a play or two, because he’s more than a gadget player in my opinion,” McCarthy said. “We had him prepared to take a series, and frankly there at the end I should’ve gave him that series, and I regret not doing that.”
The Cowboys have been forced to play their backup quarterbacks this season after the season-ending injury to Dak Prescott earlier this month.
Rush has been the starting quarterback in place of Prescott, but Lance was inserted into the game last week against the Philadelphia Eagles after Rush struggled.
The Cowboys also signed Will Grier to add a little depth at the position with Prescott out, but he has yet to see any action during the regular season in his career.
We’ll have to see what the Cowboys do at the position for the rest of the season.
