New Orleans Saints star quarterback Derek Carr suffered an oblique injury during Monday night’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. And it sounds like the team is strongly considering playing a rookie quarterback in his place while he recovers from the injury.
According to a report from NFL insider Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, the rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler is a “strong candidate” to take over as the team’s starting quarterback in Derek Carr’s absence.
“More on the #Saints’ QB situation: Rookie fifth-rounder Spencer Rattler is a strong candidate to get the start in Derek Carr’s absence, sources tell me and @RapSheet,” Garafolo said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.
“With Drake Maye getting the ball for the #Patriots, that would make five rookie QBs to get a start this year,” Garafolo continued.
When Carr left Monday night’s game with an injury, it was veteran Jake Haener who replaced him in Monday’s loss to the Chiefs. However, the Saints currently list both Haener and Rattler as the team’s backup quarterbacks on their depth chart.
Rattler completed 20 of 38 passes for 202 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions in the preseason.
The Saints selected Rattler in the fifth round of the NFL Draft earlier this year.
He has yet to play during the regular season, but it sounds like he might get his first chance this week.
