Indiana Fever rookie sensation Caitlin Clark brought a lot of new fans to the league this season, but WNBA legend Brittney Griner does not seem too happy about them.
During a recent interview, Brittney Griner called out the “new fans” – obviously referring to the fans Caitlin Clark brought to the league this season – accusing them of racism directed toward players.
“I don’t appreciate the new fans that sit there and yell racial slurs at myself, my teammates, and the people that I play against because, yeah, those might be opponents but those are friends too. They don’t deserve that,” Griner said in a video shared by Dana Scott of Az Sports Central.
“So, I don’t appreciate the new fans who think it’s okay to do that. But I do appreciate the new fans that respect the game. That are here to grow our league. Bringing people that maybe never watched the W to a WNBA game so that we can grow our fans.”
This comes after Connecticut Sun star Alyssa Thomas called out Indiana Fever fans for their “racial comments” last month.
“I think in my 11-year career, I’ve never experienced the racial comments (like those) from the Indiana Fever fan base,” Thomas said after their playoff matchup last month.
“It’s unacceptable, honestly, and there’s no place for it. We’ve been professional throughout the whole entire thing, but I’ve never been called the things that I’ve been called on social media, and there’s no place for it.”
Clearly, the players think there is a problem.
