The Kansas City Chiefs needed a roster spot in order to sign veteran wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, who is rejoining the team after a year with the New England Patriots. And it sounds like the team decided to cut one of their veteran quarterbacks to make room for the wide receiver.
Veteran quarterback Ian Book joined the team this offseason to add depth behind starter Patrick Mahomes, but NFL insider Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reported on Monday that the Chiefs had decided to release the former Notre Dame Fighting Irish star.
“The #Chiefs waived QB Ian Book, per source,” Pelissero said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

While Book was not necessarily expected to compete for a starting spot or even the backup role, this decision still led to a lot of reactions on social media.
I’m not sure what Veach is doing at QB but this is inexcusable 🫣 https://t.co/TR09QZhUCi

I thought Ian Book was the future QB for New Orleans when drafted in 2021.
Now he's being waived.
Another player that deserves a roster spot on a 53 man roster elsewhere. He wasn't getting that in KC. https://t.co/zstqpS5n5l

The #Chiefs are turning the page on Ian Book, who had trouble reading the defense.
He's onto a new chapter in his career.

Can’t wait for Book’s next chapter https://t.co/J4OwLcxsZX

The chiefs will regret this move. Won’t end well for them https://t.co/BIJm5l35iV

Book was selected in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. He spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots before joining the Chiefs this offseason.
With Book now released, the Chiefs have three quarterbacks on the roster: starter Patrick Mahomes, backup Carson Wentz, and third-year young quarterback Chris Oladokun. We’ll have to see where Book lands next.
