When the New England Patriots brought in veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett this offseason, many around the NFL world expected that his role would be to help prepare the team’s new rookie quarterback to be the team’s full-time starter. But in a surprising twist, it does not seem like that’s the way he is approaching his role with the team.

During a recent appearance on Up & Adams, Jacoby Brissett made it clear that he is not just in New England to help prepare rookie quarterback Drake Maye to take over as the team’s starting quarterback – he intends to be the team’s starter as long as he’s with the Patriots.

“Two things can be true: Like I can be perfect for the situation, but I’m the perfect guy to start, too,” Brissett said on the show according to Pro Football Talk. “Don’t take that away from me either. I fully expect myself to be the starter as long as I am here. Whatever happens outside of that, that has nothing to do with me. That doesn’t mean I little myself for somebody else. That just means like hey, I’m not too big for a situation to where I can go out there and perform but also go out there and help my teammates and help lead this team.”

Obviously, this is some pretty shocking news for anyone who thought that he was simply there to support Maye, and the NFL world had a lot to say about it on social media.

It will certainly be interesting to see how this situation plays out.
