Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay is one of the brightest minds in the NFL. He also was one of the league’s most prominent night owls.
The Rams coach used to work long, long days at the office—not your average eight-hour workday, not even 12. McVay revealed that he used to work 18-hour days, with the rest left for sleep.
Los Angeles’ Super Bowl-winning coach regrets that lifestyle now in hindsight.
“I used to think it was cool to think you can go 18 hours,” McVay told ESPN’s Stephen Holder. “You know what that is? That’s called being a dumbass.”
Whatever hindrance to McVay’s sleep schedule existed, it didn’t affect how the team played under his direction. McVay has led the Rams to two Super Bowl appearances, winning Super Bowl LVI at Sofi Stadium. They became the second team to win the Super Bowl in their home venue, one year after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers achieved the feat first.
McVay and the Rams hope to rebound after a surprisingly successful season last year. While some were down on the team, the Rams emerged as a Wild Card team and won on Wild Card Weekend. Ultimately, they lost to the Detroit Lions, Matthew Stafford’s former team.
Los Angeles will once again have all eyes on them this year. Sean McVay, meanwhile, will probably get to keep his eyes open longer with his adjusted sleep schedule.
