NASCAR created headlines recently by debuting an electric car model, the ABB NASCAR EV Prototype.
The league considers the model the future of racing during the debut at the Chicago Street Race last Saturday.
NASCAR views it as a key plank in its plan to eliminate its carbon dioxide footprint within the next ten years.
“While NASCAR is committed to the historic role of the combustion engine in racing, it is also committed to decarbonizing its operations and reducing its own carbon footprint to zero across its core operations by 2035 through electrification and innovative solutions,” the race league said.
Some conservative fans appeared disgusted with the news on Twitter, the social media platform currently marketed as X.
“The day this hits the track I’m done,” one fan wrote.
“I will stop watching if you go full EV, try to listen to your REAL FAN BASE FOR ONCE,” one user wrote.
“When you go EV, I’m definitely out” predicted one fan.
“NASCAR is reaching for one percent of fans and abandoning 70 percent of their fanbase,” another user scolded. “This will kill the sport. The marketing directors need to really evaluate doing this.”
“I like the sound of NASCAR,” another user wrote.
