The Atlanta Falcons shocked everyone when they chose Washington Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 overall pick in the NFL Draft just months after signing veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins to be the starter. And it sounds like Penix hasn’t exactly been consistent during his first few practices with the team.
According to a report from Marc Raimondi, while Michael Penix Jr. has had “flashes of brilliance” during practice, he has “been plagued with inconsistency,” which is something that he struggled with throughout his college career, as well.
“Penix was the story of the draft when he was taken at No. 8 after the Falcons had already signed Kirk Cousins. Penix has shown flashes of brilliance this spring, especially on the deep ball. But he also has been plagued with inconsistency, missing some touch passes.” Raimondi wrote for ESPN in a report last week.
Obviously, this is a pretty brutal report on Penix, especially considering he is one of the oldest and most experienced quarterbacks in the draft class at 24 years old.
He’ll still have time to learn and grow behind Cousins, but it’s not a good sign that he is still struggling with inconsistency at this point in his career.
