Over the past several years, the NFL has been leaning heavily into its efforts to expand the game and the league overseas. And it sounds like one foreign city is extremely interested in potentially hosting a Super Bowl in the future.
During a recent interview, London Mayor Sadiq Khan made it clear that he would love to see the city host the Super Bowl eventually.
“The Super Bowl is really important for us,” Sadiq Khan said according to The Athletic. “We have a number of American football games and I want it to come here because we want American sports fans in Europe to come to London to watch them, not just go to America.”
Obviously, this would have logistical challenges. The game is usually played in prime time in the United States with a kickoff usually around 6:30 p.m. in order to maximize the number of people that can watch the game on television on both the west and east coast. That would be an 11:30 p.m. kickoff in London with the game not finishing until about 3:30 a.m.
Additionally, there’s the simple concern of travel for fans, media, and the team as traveling overseas makes everything just a bit more difficult for everyone.
That doesn’t rule it out as a possibility, but it would certainly be a challenge.
