It’s been four years since the NFL franchise in Washington officially ditched its problematic name and two years since the team embraced the Washington Commanders name. But after new leadership took over last year, it sounds like the team is considering changing its name once again.
While no change is imminent, Marjorie Harris, the wife of majority owner Josh Harris, left the door open for a potential change during some recent comments – though she also made it clear that the team would remain the Commanders “for now.”
“As you would imagine, everybody has an opinion about the name,” Harris said according to JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington. “Some good, some bad, some in the middle. And I think that we have a lot of work to do and so that name issue is going to be on the side for now until we can get things going. And I mean quite frankly I had a whole day out in the community and I kept referring to the team as the Commanders and — you know what? — sound pretty good to me. So, for now, it’s the Commanders.”
It’s not clear what exactly the team would change its name to as they have made it very clear that they won’t be returning to the old name. But “for now” it will still be the Commanders.
