When the New England Patriots selected North Carolina Tar Heels star quarterback Drake Maye with the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL Draft, it was widely expected that the team would like him to be their starting quarterback this upcoming season. But based on some recent comments from head coach Jerod Mayo, it sounds like Maye may be a long way from that.
Following Drake Maye’s first practice reps with the team as part of the New England Patriots rookie minicamp, New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo had a pretty brutal assessment of how Maye has looked so far, making it clear that he has a long way to go before he’ll be ready to take over as the team’s new starting quarterback.
“Early impressions of Drake? Look, he has a lot to work on,” Mayo said, via a transcript from the team, according to Pro Football Talk. “A lot to work on. But I have no doubt that he will put the time in. You didn’t see him out here yesterday, but he was here all night trying to get on the same page as everyone else.”
We’ll have to see how long it takes before Maye is ready to play. In the meantime, the Patriots signed veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett who would likely serve as the starter if Maye is not yet ready to play.
