After several high-profile and very costly mistakes last season followed by his inactivity throughout the Kansas City Chiefs playoff run, many expected the team to part ways with wide receiver Kadarius Toney this offseason. But while that has not happened yet, the team is not committing to him past this year, either.
According to a report from ESPN, the Kansas City Chiefs have decided not to pick up the fifth-year option on his contract, meaning that he is set to become a free agent at the end of the 2024 NFL season.
“The Chiefs declined Thursday to exercise the fifth-year option for the 2025 season on the contract of wide receiver Kadarius Toney, a source told ESPN, giving him one more season remaining on the deal he signed with the New York Giants as a first-round draft pick in 2021,” Adam Teicher of ESPN wrote on Thursday night.
While this isn’t necessarily surprising given that he has not performed to the level that would merit the team picking up his fifth-year option, it does make it clear that this could be his last season with the team.
However, Kansas City has made it very clear that Toney is in their plans for this upcoming season.
