The Atlanta Falcons caused a lot of conversations over the past couple of weeks for their decisions and acquisitions at the quarterback position as the team signed veteran Kirk Cousins to be their starting quarterback and then bizarrely selected Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 overall pick in the draft presumably to be his backup for the next several years. And the Falcons weren’t done adding quarterbacks.
Following the NFL Draft this weekend, the Atlanta Falcons added yet another quarterback to the roster, signing former Illinois Fighting Illini quarterback John Paddock as an undrafted rookie. While certainly not considered one of the top quarterback prospects in the draft, Paddock showed some promise for the Illini, particularly at the end of the season.
Paddock started the final three games of the season for Illinois and put up some pretty impressive numbers, including 507 yards and four touchdowns in a win over Indiana during the season.
While Paddock obviously won’t be the starting quarterback this upcoming season with Cousins, Penix and Taylor Heinicke also on the roster, it sounds like he’s going to have a chance to compete and show what he can do in hopes of potentially earning a roster spot on the team, or at least a place on the practice squad.
We’ll have to see how it goes.
