Last week, the Atlanta Falcons made the shocking decision to select Washington Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 overall pick in the NFL Draft despite signing Kirk Cousins to a four-year deal worth $100 million just weeks before. And perhaps most notably, they did it without previously informing Cousins it was a possibility – which could be a problem for Cousins based on his recent comments.
As Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk points out, when Kirk Cousins initially signed with the Atlanta Falcons last month, he made a big deal about how important it was for the head coach, the general manager, and the team owner to all be on “the same page” as the starting quarterback.
“When the owner, General Manager, head coach, and quarterback are on the same page, that’s when you have really a chance to go win a Super Bowl,” Cousins said according to Pro Football Talk. “As I looked at the Atlanta Falcons, I believe strongly that the owner, head coach, General Manager, and quarterback can all be on the same page. And that’s exciting for me, and so that’s why I’m thrilled to be here.”
Obviously, that’s not what happened. Cousins was left completely in the dark while the team made decisions without him. And based on how much he clearly seemed to value that communication, it could be a problem going forward if he does not get it.
