As Joe Burrow continues to recover from the wrist injury that brought his 2023 season to a premature end, the Cincinnati Bengals are adding some insurance at quarterback.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Bengals have re-signed veteran quarterback Jake Browning to a two-year contract through the 2025 season. The Washington product spent the past three seasons in Cincinnati before entering this season as an exclusive rights free agent.
After going undrafted in 2019, Browning began his NFL career as a member of the Minnesota Vikings before the Bengals signed him to their practice squad ahead of the 2021 season. Last season, the 2016 Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year saw the most significant playing time of his NFL career, starting seven games and completing completing an NFL-high 70.3 percent of his passes for 1,936 yards, 12 touchdowns and 7 interceptions after Burrow suffered his season-ending injury in Week 11.
In returning to Cincinnati, Browning will continue to provide insurance behind Burrow, although he now has competition for being the 2019 Heisman Trophy winner’s top understudy in 2024. In addition to re-signing Browning, the Bengals also signed free-agent quarterback Logan Woodside to a one-year contract on Tuesday after the Toledo product spent the past two seasons as a member of the Atlanta Falcons’ roster.
