The Washington Commanders currently hold the No. 2 pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft next week. And according to new general manager Adam Peters, the team will likely be sticking with the pick.
We have seen in the past that trading down can set teams up in a huge way for the future. Just look at what the Chicago Bears did last season, trading the No. 1 overall pick to the Carolina Panthers, which ultimately resulted in the Bears getting the 2024 first overall pick in return.
That being said, the Commanders have an opportunity to select any quarterback they want in the upcoming draft except for Williams at No. 2. And it seems like that possibility is too enticing for Adam Peters and the Commanders to pass up by potentially trading down.
“We feel great about staying at No. 2,” said Peters via ESPN’s John Keim. “I don’t see a whole lot of scenarios trading down.”
The Commanders traded 2023 starting quarterback Sam Howell this offseason to the Seattle Seahawks. So it seems almost guaranteed that if the Commanders do stick at No. 2, they will be using the pick on a quarterback of the future.
The only question now is which quarterback will the Commanders end up taking? LSU product Jayden Daniels has gained steam throughout the pre-draft process, and recent reports suggest that the Commanders may have interest there. North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell also appears to be in the mix for Washington.
Only time will tell who the Commanders end up going with. But unless they receive an offer they simply can’t refuse, it sure sounds like they will be selecting a quarterback at No. 2.
